Looking for the best strategies and tactics for paintball? What would you do…. Tzu?
At UKPaintball there is one question we get asked a lot. What are the best strategies and tactics for paintball? Well, to find the answer we decided to locate the tallest tree in UKPaintball' s Game Zones. We climbed straight to the top of that tree! And we found General Sun Tzu. Who? Tzu.
We will get to that. But let's start at the beginning before we reveal the answers. We first asked ourselves the important questions, those starting with a Who, What, When and How!
Who is "The Daddy" of Warfare? What tactics can you use to outwit your enemy? When is the best time to strike? How do you lead your army to victory?
Let's just say that iconic military leaders, and scholars of Warfare alike, often unanimously believe that a man called Sun Tzu had the answers in abundance. To coin a phrase, when it comes to warfare, he "wrote the book". That book was titled, "The Art of War".
The Book Starts; "The Art of War is vital to the state. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin”.
And so, begins one of the great works on strategy, namely military strategy. It was written, around 2500 Years ago in China by General Sun Tzu, for the terrifying King of WU who was leader of one of China's Feuding states. The book has subsequently influenced leaders for 1000's of years since, including those in the American Civil War and more recently the Iraq war. It’s certainly been a book kept in the General's back pocket, like a golfer keeps his Yardage Book!
At 13 Chapters of how to wage warfare and win, it is a bit too chunky to cover all in this Blog. We at UKPaintball will cut straight to the chase for you. Sun Tzu believed there are five essentials for Victory….
"He will win who has military capacity and is not interfered with by the sovereign. "
One of the best-known stories in "The Art of War” is when King Wu recruited Sun Tzu. It was from the get-go, that Tzu said he had only one condition to work for the King. This was, as the recruited General, it was Tzu's duty to carry out his mission, even if the King protested. King Wu agreed!
The King of Wu tested Sun Tzu's skills by commanding him to train a harem of 180 concubines into soldiers. Sun Tzu divided them into two companies, appointing the two concubines most favoured by the king as the company commanders. When Sun Tzu first ordered the concubines to face right, they giggled. In response, Sun Tzu said that the general, in this case himself, was responsible for ensuring that soldiers understood the commands given to them. Then, he reiterated the command, and again the concubines giggled. Sun Tzu then ordered the execution of the king's two favoured concubines, to the king's protests. He explained that if the general's soldiers understood their commands but did not obey, it was the fault of the officers.

"He will win who, prepared himself, waits to take the enemy unprepared. "
Here, here, we agree! Deception is "The Art OF War". Many a battle has been won by flanking the enemy troops. Waiting for the time to strike when the opponent least expects it!
"He will win whose army is animated by the same spirit throughout all its ranks."
So, get the detail of your attack down to a tee and stay as one unit. Use stealth, don’t throw away your troops. Celebrate your mini victories and successes. And most important of all…Keep your troops warm, well fed, and watered! When the army is restless and distrustful, trouble is sure to come.
"He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight.”
Nothing wrong with bunkering down and becoming the "American Sniper”. There is a time and a place to be "Over the Top" as one from the trenches.
"He will win who knows how to handle both superior and Inferior forces."
It's like the old football adage, "You can only play what's in front of you". You may be down in numbers, so may need to divide and conquer! If your enemy responds to a frontal attack, he can still be crushed from behind.
One last message from Sun Tzu, and you're ready to go!
"If you know the enemy and you know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle."
So, there it is, and we hope this is all useful to get you in the right Mindset for your UKPaintball Event.
